What is Innovation? Why Innovation is important?

What is Innovation? – Innovation may be defined as exploiting new ideas leading to the creation of a new product, process, or service.

It is not just the invention of a new idea that is important. It is actually “bringing it to market”, putting it into practice and exploiting it in a way that leads to new products, services, or systems that add value or improve quality. It possibly involves technological transformation and management restructuring. Innovation also means using modern technology and out-of-the-box thinking to create new value and drive significant changes in society.

Innovation important

Experts have identified many types of innovation, such as ‘Product Innovation’ that entails the introduction of a new product or a service that is new or considerably improved. ‘Process Innovation’ involves implementing a new or significantly improved production or delivery method. ‘Supply Chain Innovation’ is innovation that transforms the sourcing of input products from the market and the delivery of output products to customers. ‘Marketing Innovation’ involves the evolution of new marketing methods, including enhancements in product design or packaging, promotion, or pricing.

Types of Innovation at a Glance

There are two simple ways to sort innovation. The first looks at how big the change is. The second looks at what changes: the product, how it’s made, or how a business earns money. The types listed above belong to the second group. The table below puts both views side by side.

Type Grouped by What it means Example
Incremental Size of change Small, steady improvements to something that already exists. Most innovation inside companies is of this kind. A new phone model with a better camera and longer battery life.
Radical Size of change A big leap that creates something truly new, often built on fresh science or technology. The move from film cameras to digital photography.
Disruptive Size of change Starts as a cheaper or simpler option for people that big players ignore. Over time it moves up and reshapes the whole market. The idea was made popular by Harvard professor Clayton Christensen. UPI, which gave small shops and street vendors free digital payments without any card machine.
Product What changes A new product or service, or one that’s clearly better than before. Electric scooters taking the place of petrol two-wheelers.
Process What changes A better way to make or deliver something, usually cheaper, faster or with fewer errors. Aravind Eye Hospital’s assembly-line method for cataract surgery.
Business model What changes A new way to create value for customers and earn money from it. Jio’s free voice calls with low-cost data packs in 2016.

One innovation can sit in more than one box. Jio, for example, was both a business model innovation and a disruptive one.

Why Innovation is important?

Studies have confirmed that all businesses want to be more innovative. One survey found that almost 90 percent of businesses consider innovation a priority. This suggests that the importance of innovation is increasing significantly. In today’s economic landscape, innovativeness has become a major factor in strategic planning. It has been acknowledged that innovation leads to wealth creation. Although efficiency is essential for business success, it cannot sustain business growth in the long run.

Most often, a planned, measured combination of ideas, objects, and people leads to innovation, resulting in new business ideas and technological revolutions. To be considered valuable, new products and services must be strong enough to move through rigorous commercialization processes and into the marketplace. Management expert Peter Drucker said that if an established organization, which in this age must innovate, cannot innovate, it faces decline and extinction. Many organizations are adopting measures to strengthen their ability to innovate. Such companies are creating a reliable innovation operating system, an important indicator of corporate sustainability.

Research indicates that competition, combined with strong demand, is a significant driver of innovation. The intensity of competition determines innovation and productivity. Innovation includes not only products and services but also new processes, business systems, and management methods that significantly impact productivity and growth.

Innovation in India: Three Real Examples

India offers some of the clearest proof that innovation isn’t only about big budgets. Here are three cases most of us have seen up close.

1. UPI: Instant Payments for Everyone

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) was launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016. It lets anyone send money from a phone in seconds, using just a mobile number or a QR code. No card. No swipe machine. No fee for the person paying.

The scale today is hard to believe. In September 2026 alone, UPI handled 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore. That’s about 802 million payments every single day. A vegetable seller with a printed QR code now takes digital payments the same way a big mall does.

2. Jio: Cheap Data That Changed Daily Life

Reliance Jio launched its 4G service in September 2016 with free voice calls and very low data prices. Before Jio arrived, Indians paid almost ₹228 per GB of mobile data. Rival telecom companies had to cut their prices fast to stay in the game.

Usage shot up. Within six months of the launch, India’s monthly mobile data use grew from about 200 million GB to over 1 billion GB. Video streaming, online classes, digital payments, and small online businesses all grew on top of this cheap data. It’s a textbook case of the point made above: tough competition pushed the whole market to innovate.

3. ISRO: Doing More With Less

ISRO is known worldwide for frugal innovation. It launched its Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) in November 2013 and reached Mars orbit in September 2014 on its first attempt. The whole mission cost about ₹450 crore, less than the budget of the Hollywood film Gravity.

In August 2023, Chandrayaan-3 made India the first country to land near the Moon’s south pole. Its total budget was about ₹615 crore. There’s a lesson in failure here too. Chandrayaan-2’s lander crashed in 2019, and ISRO fixed those problems before trying again.

Example Type of innovation Main impact
UPI Process + Disruptive Free, instant payments for everyone, from large stores to street vendors.
Jio Business model + Disruptive Made mobile internet affordable for hundreds of millions of people.
ISRO Process (frugal engineering) World-class space missions at a small part of the usual cost.

Where Does India Stand on the Global Innovation Index?

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) publishes the Global Innovation Index (GII) every year. It ranks countries on how well they innovate, looking at research spending, patents, startups, skills, and creative exports.

In the GII 2026, India ranks 38th out of 139 economies. It’s also first among lower-middle-income economies and first in Central and Southern Asia. India kept the same rank it had in 2025, and it has come a long way from 81st place in 2015. Switzerland holds the top spot.

GII 2026 measure India’s rank
Overall rank 38th of 139
Innovation outputs 25th
Innovation inputs 49th
Strongest area Knowledge and technology outputs (15th)
Weakest areas Infrastructure (62nd), Business sophistication (63rd)
Best single indicator ICT services exports as % of total trade (1st in the world)

The gap between inputs and outputs tells an interesting story. India gets better results than its resources would suggest. Put simply, it does a lot with a little, much like ISRO. The weak spots are infrastructure, institutions, and business sophistication. Improving these could help India climb much higher in the coming years.

Today, we need innovators more than ever. Every organization and business is feeling the impact of globalization, migration, technological and knowledge revolutions, and climate change. Innovation will add value and broaden the employment base. Innovation is imperative if the quality of life is to improve in these trying circumstances. Innovation will make the world a better place for the younger generation.

  1. I like the small blurb at the end of your article when you brought in climate change issues. In business there are blue oceans and red oceans, but climate change has caused both “oceans” or markets to completely innovate in the way that they do process, supply chain, marketing, and management in order to keep up with not only this trend, but public view revolution.

I for one am extremely happy with how businesses have been adapting to this “trend”. Our world is becoming more eco friendly, and that alone is something that we must be thankful for today!

  2. I like your remark: “… competition combined with strong demand is a major driver of innovation”. It sound to me an innovative and pragmatic way to address innovation and think about it.

  3. I really like your review, I would like to add only that from XIX century innovations is rather expected in business. Innovation become such a common thing that we can hardly find a company which not uses innovation as a tool. Innovation is like a black box, we want to jump inside and find new ways.

  4. i really like this review.I was searching, why now a days innovation become so important for any company, every company wants to make their own path rather following others.thanks

  5. Whilst i agree that …”competition cpmbined with strong demand is a major driver of innovation.” It’s also true that even where demand is weak and there is scramble for the market Innovation will be strong
