Women are interested in a career these days. Apart from marriage, they also would like to pursue their ambitions. No doubt, it is difficult as they have to balance home and office, but nevertheless they are interested in work outside their homes. Bit the question is can they also take up risk oriented work Even though they may be pursing careers, but some job demand certain risks which men have always felt they can handle them.

Women and Risks at place of work
Women have had to fight their way to pursue their career interests. Men have always felt that women were not capable of handling certain professions. But this has been proven wrong. Women have taken up challenging assignments such as in the police, army etc. and have proved equal to men. There are no way less than men.

Women are given the “softer tasks”. In India, women pilots want to fly fighter jets. So far they have not been allowed because of their sex. But now opinion is tilting in their favor and although there are certain pregnancy restrictions, they are likely to be given the opportunity to work in this sphere of activity as well.

Risk taking jobs require a lot of energy, hard work, determination and the ability to withstand pressures. Since women have to take care of their household as well they have to put in extra effort to excel in their work. But they are willing to take up such assignments. They are not afraid of the unknown. Whatever may come they are willing to take the risks involved in their respective jobs.

Business women also have to take risky decisions. Sometimes their whole business depends upon the decisions they take. There are times they have to handle problems pertaining to labor. These also involve much risks as any hasty decision on their part can lead to lockouts and strikes or revolt by the labor.

Now women are involved with international affairs. Ms. Hillary Clinton in the United States represents their country in foreign affairs and has to deal with situations that have international repercussions. Ex-Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi had to run the country’s affairs skillfully as well as maintain cordial relations with other countries. Both the women are associated with risky jobs. Which require intelligence, hard work and dedicated efforts.

The modern woman is not afraid of taking risks at her workplace. She wants to be on par with men and enjoy the same benefits as he is enjoying. Women have definitely come a along way.

Recession still continues although it is showing signs of lifting. The entire 2009 has been an agonizing year for the employed and continues to be so in the U.S. still and in other countries as well. Many were thrown out of jobs and left in the cold. This has been a very psychologically trying year for the employed.

How did recession affect the employed and job seekers?
The job market has been bad for the past one year. Many were rendered jobless and those looking for jobs were unable to get one. They had to settle for less remunerative jobs or were simply unable to get one in their respective fields. Many had to take jobs which had nothing to do with their qualifications and experience.

The remuneration that a person received was much less than what they were earning before. Also in some companies, the employee continued to function, but he or she had to face pay-cuts. Bonuses were denied. The take-home salary was less. Many found it difficult to maintain their homes. They had school fees to pay, home mortgages to be met and so on so forth.

Even now the scenario continues, but predictions are being made that by the year end or beginning of next year situation will improve.

How did the trauma of losing job impact the employee?
For the employed it was something new that was happening. They had never seen something like this before. Sudden financial loss was too much to bear. Some even committed suicide as they were unable to find a job and were rendered penniless. Standard of living came down drastically. Many found it difficult to adjust to their new income levels, although they had no choice.

The employer’s attitude towards employee
The employer of course was harsh on the employee. Many of the staff members were rendered jobless within 24 hours, some without notice. The manager had to ensure that the company could withstand the recession. Investment was low as banks were not giving loans. Naturally, they could not maintain a large staff, and many of those drawing high salaries were asked to leave. Bonus was withdrawn and increments withheld. No recruitment policy was adopted. “Cutting costs” was the approach. The company was interested in reducing its expenditure and overhead costs. This scene was common in all countries.

Recession has been a frustrating experience for the employed. It still continues to be so, but now many feel that the “depression” will be over soon, and companies will start recruiting. Again, the job seeker hopes situation will be good and he or she will be able to earn a good pay package.

Women are now much interested in pursuing a career. Being educated and well-qualified, they naturally would like to utilize their talents in productive way. They would like to take up challenging jobs along with men and prove that they are no less in many ways from them.

Unlike men, they have to shoulder responsibilities at home as well as on the office front. They have to bear children if there are married and also have to take care of their likes and dislikes of their husbands. It proves to be a heavy burden for them to cope with pressures as a wife, mother and an employee.

How pregnancy affect’s a woman’s career?
Although many women are remaining single to pursue career, there are others who would like to set up home by rearing children. They opt for marriage as well, although they try their level best to focus on their career interests as well.

For a career woman having children means taking time off from work. Well established companies do provide maternity leave benefits and ensure that their women employees are able to take on the responsibility of being a mother comfortably.

Pregnancy means one is away from work. It could be a tough time as one has been actively involved in whatever one was doing and now one has to take it easy. The pleasure of delivering your child is there, but one has to make some compromises, at lest for while.

Much would depend upon the physical health of the woman after delivery as to when she can start work again. Of course with a small baby to take care, it is not easy for her at her workplace. Nevertheless, once back at work she would prefer to concentrate again on her career.

Does pregnancy hinder a woman’s work?
Many employers often hesitate to recruit women as they feel that pregnancy may keep them away from work But the policy of equal opportunity does not permit employers to discriminate against women.

Pregnancy is a trying period for a woman no doubt. But a married woman would like to have child and later on continue with her work. At a later point her relationship with her husband can get strained as she may find it difficult to balance work and home. A husband may complain that his working wife is concentrating more on the career than looking after the baby at home. Sometimes this strained relationship could result in divorce.

Health also must cooperate for a woman who has delivered a child. Any pregnancy complications can keep her away from work for a longer period of time.

It is quite obvious that although working woman would like to be a mother, it is a difficult time for her as she has to at least for a while keep away from her career pursuits.

Adolescence is an age of revolt and rebellion against parental guidance and support. Many teenagers prefer to go on their own steam, rather than do as what their parents say. In the West, teenagers detest parental interference in their personal matters. In the East, of course, parents still have a say in the matters of their children.

Pursuing a career of their choice is very important for a teenager. After all, his or her entire life is dependent upon what he or she decides to do in his or her life. A life long avocation must provide satisfaction and remuneration. The teenager has to decide whether to take on a profession in which he or she can excel and gain monetarily as well.

Do teenagers require help in choosing a career?
Many teenagers, particularly in the West, prefer to decide upon their career on their own rather than seek parental guidance. They feel that they are old enough to know what is good for them. Also they like to take their own decisions and not rely on others. At school counselors are there to guide them and often peer pressure also influences their decision regarding career choice.

Advantages of teenagers deciding their own career

It makes them more independent.

They are responsible for their actions.

They are more aware of the pitfalls in a particular avocation.

They are prepared to face the consequences of a wrong choice in career matters rather than blame their elders.

They choose what they like the most.

Disadvantages of teenagers deciding career matters

Teenagers are immature.

They are impulsive.

Indecision can make them falter in their choice.

Rash decision.

Succumb to peer pressures.

Know in all types.

Teenagers some feel are too young to decide their own career matters. Parents particularly are very concerned about their affairs. On the other hand in this modern day and age, teenagers are revolting against too much parental interference and guidance.

A profession can be challenging if we are well equipped to take up the challenge. We all like to excel in what we do. Our performance level must be at its best for substantial results. Is this an easy task? Certainly not. Why so? Obviously, we need to have requisite skills to perform well. A person who is not well equipped in skills will turn out to be poor performer.

A prospective employer always would prefer an employee who is well qualified and possesses the necessary skills to perform the job well. Apart from having an academic qualification it is also necessary to have the required skills for the job on hand.

Why skills should be updated?
It is essential to update one’s skills as the technology is constantly changing and one has to perform innumerable tasks on a modernized scale. Several companies impart regular training to their employees to ensure that they know the latest work techniques.

Even in Government held posts, employees undergo regular training on and off in order to become aware of the latest work operations. The employee should not lag behind in this competitive world due to lack of latest skill know-how.

Why skills are important?
The job market is thoroughly professional. Most professions require certain skills. The desk oriented jobs are not so popular. Those who are career minded would like to acquire certain specialized skills in order to earn well and also excel. A mere engineering degree is not sufficient these days. Many students also prefer to do their MBA. They want to specialize further so that their earning capacity increases.

A nurse for instance has specialized skills. Only she can perform the job. Similarly, doctors are also trained. Only they with their special knowledge and skills can perform a complicated operation. A layman cannot handle such a job.

With growing modernization and a specialized job market skills are very essential. At school level it self children are now becoming aware of the requirements of the ever changing job market.

Parents in the present times have a major role to play in helping their child decide his or her future career. No doubt, the child has to make his or her own decisions, but timely guidance and mature advice helps them to take on a course of action that would brighten up their future prospects.

Why parent’s advice is required?
Children are often confused as to what they should do. Of course, peer pressure often makes them decide upon a particular career. Yet they need some mature advice as to what is the right course of action. Most young people these days do not like their parents to interfere in their decision-making, yet they do not mind what they have to say about a given situation.

Parental opinion helps them to sort out their confusion. Of course, they are unable to decide which career to choose. Here parents are able to sort out the confusion in their minds by informing them about the positive and negative aspects of a particular career.

Children are always apprehensive about the future- what their life will be if they choose a particular career goal path. Will they enjoy prosperity? Will they face failure? Parents have to show much concern to their worries and try to explain to them that whatever they choose would be for their own good as the decision is their own.

Do children dislike parental interference in career matters?
Despite children wanting their parents to guide them, yet they would like to take their own decisions. They generally do not like to be told what to do. They do seek advice, but the final decision is theirs. They like to be independent of their parents.

In some countries, particularly in the East, parents do a play role in the decision-making process of their children. But in the West, children despise too much parental interference. Nowadays, even in the East, modern cultural trends are curtailing parental involvement in the affairs of their children.

Children do need the support and mature advice of their parents, but yet they hesitate to allow them decide what career they should pursue. They like to undertake something they feel that suits them best. Parental help maybe required to clear up confusion, but only to that extent. Final decision the child makes.

Some people know what they want to be from as young as 5 years of age. However, most people still do not know what they want to do in life even after a few years of working. Therefore, learning how to choose a career is not only for high school students or those in college. Some professionals decide to change careers simply because they do not like the job they currently have. This mostly happens because you took on a job not because you like it or enjoy it but because you need the money. After about five or ten years, you realize that you hate your job and it is not what you want to do until you retire. In this case, getting career guidance is very important.

First step in choosing a career is by understanding yourself. This will help you realize what you enjoy doing and if you can make money doing it. The best way to do this is taking a personality test. These tests are available on almost all career-oriented websites on the internet for free. It is also important to understand your values and know what you are willing to do and what you consider morally or professionally wrong. If there are certain aspects of your job that you do not like, you are more likely than not in the wrong career. Another way to do this is establishing your hobbies and what you do during your free time. Hobbies such as painting, throwing parties, writing or singing can easily be incorporated into a career by taking design lessons, becoming an event planner, an author or an entertainer respectively.

If you have sources such as a career guidance counselor or a career center, it would be the best place to start. If not, visiting career websites can also make the process easier. If possible, apply for internships or volunteer in a profession that appeals you. You can shadow a professional in that industry and decide if that is the career path for you. This should last about a month or two and you will understand what a day-to-day life would be in that industry.

Another tip in choosing your career is learning universal skills such as writing, typing and computer skills among others. When you study something that leads to just one career, then you have closed all other opportunities for changing your career in the future. Therefore, before embarking on a specific college degree (like medicine or law), ensure that that is what you want to do for the rest of your professional life. Choosing a career is important because most of our lives are spent at work. Therefore, incorporating our interests and hobbies into our careers can result in the best jobs we can hold.

Career is a must these days. With growing inflation, even women have entered the job market. They are now competing with men. Earlier, women were confined to traditional roles such as housewives but now they also want to contribute to the family budget. The only hassle is that women in the job market have often been confined to undertake traditional jobs rather than being allowed to undertake challenging jobs that men usually take up.

Why women are usually confined to traditional jobs?
Men usually feel that women can handle less strenuous jobs such as those of a secretary or a nurse. The opinion they have of women is that that they are well suited for jobs which involve care, compassion and also less intellectual and physical exercise.

Women also preferred jobs that were easy to perform and were desk-oriented. They had children to look after and a home to take care, so naturally they would like a “light” job. They never objected to what men had to say about their capacity to work outside as they themselves felt they were suited for “feminine” oriented jobs. What is the scene like now?

Why present day woman prefer non-traditional jobs?
Women no prefer to take up the same challenges as men in the work arena. They feel there are physically and intellectually capable in taking on work responsibilities that men can handle. They are on par with men, and are not inferior to them.

The non-traditional jobs that women have are now taking on are such as police officers, armed services officers, astronauts etc. These are jobs which require one to take risks and are physically and intellectually demanding.

The difference between traditional and non-traditional jobs
Non-traditional jobs definitely are more paying and have better benefits than ordinary routine stereo-typed jobs. They provide much job satisfaction and require specialized skills.

Traditional jobs are easy to perform and less paying. They, perhaps, are not so interesting. They are mundane and routinely performed. Some of the jobs do not require highly specialized skills.

Non-traditional jobs are preferred by women these days. Even men have accepted women in these jobs. Traditional jobs are there no doubt for additional income for women, but perhaps are less appealing as women want to pursue careers.

One has to be careful, about one’s choice of career. After all, it is a lifetime pursuit. A wrong choice could turn out to be disastrous.

Why a career?
One needs to earn one’s bread and butter. A mere job at times could be very frustrating. One would like to undertake a profession as it is more rewarding and challenging. There are several options to choose from; one can become a pilot, or a join the police force or perhaps the army. One can do business. The decision is yours. The right choice must be made of course. There must not be any regrets later.

Why career guidance?
One must seek guidance in order to make the right choice. Experts are there to guide you as to which career is good for you. They have all the required information about a particular career at their disposal. They are in a better position to tell about the pros and cons of a particular career. They can guide you as to how well suited you are for a particular avocation and also what monetary benefits you can gain from it.

Career guidance is available at professional institutes as well as in schools and colleges. Young people while pursuing their studies, make inquiries about the career they can pursue. In schools and colleges much awareness is created about the career one can pursue and choices they have at their disposal. Young minds often vacillate. They are unable to decide for themselves.

Parental guidance is also very good for young people who are at crossroads of deciding upon a career. Elders are mature and are able to guide their children better as to what kind of work they could take up after they complete their education.

Most of us have to work these days due to inflation. One bread earner is not sufficient in a household. Two people have to earn. Naturally, career has become part of one’s life now. Even women have to work. So making the best choice of the kind of work one wants to do is good.
