Google PageRank Algorithm

PageRank is defined as a numeric value used by Google to show the value a page has on the internet. According to Google, all pages that have links to other pages are a benefit to that other page. If visitors go to a certain site from one particular page, then that page is ranked very important. When users visit a site from another page, that page votes for that page being visited. Google determines the value of a vote based on the importance of that web page to the search engine. To determine this importance, Google have come up with a system that enables them to calculate the importance of the page. The level of PageRank will determine if and where that page appears in search results.

Calculating PageRank
Google uses an equation to calculate PageRank. This equation is as below:

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + … + PR(tn)/C(tn)

In that equation, the values t1 and tn are pages that are linked to the page whose rank is being calculated. The value C represents all outbound links on that page while‘d’ is the damping factor. This is normally calculated as a standard 0.85. Google also uses the term ‘share’ to calculate the final PageRank of a page. This is done by dividing the PageRank value by the outbound links that are on that page. This is the ‘vote’ that other pages have helped cast on the page to increase the rank. Therefore, Google shares out the number of ‘votes’ on that page for all pages that have ‘voted’ for that page so that they all get a point towards their PageRank. Therefore, the less outbound links there are on a page the higher that page will rank and that ‘vote’ will be valued more when linked to other pages.

According to many experts, Google uses an algorithm to calculate PageRank. This algorithm is not known by people other than Google. Like all algorithms, moving from level 1 to 2 will be much easier than moving from level 2 to 3. When calculating PageRank, previous positions do not count in that all other information is discarded and PageRank calculated afresh. If two pages without any other links ‘vote’ for each other, their PageRank values will be calculated based on each others PageRanks. Therefore, one of them will have inaccurate information as it was calculated based on the other’s PageRank, which had not been calculated yet. This will consequently lead to the second one having inaccurate information because it will also be calculated based on inaccurate data.

In order to get to a more accurate PageRank value, Google uses the newly calculated PageRank values to calculate slightly more accurate PageRank values. After repeating the calculations about fifty times, the difference between the results starts becoming negligible and Google gets its values at that point. However, based on this algorithm, it is almost impossible to have 100% accuracy rates for PageRank values. This is because the initial information used was not accurate and subsequent calculations were based on that information. This long process is the reason why PageRank updates take as long as they do.

All forms of business pose a form or other of risk. Some say that people will only make profits when there has been an element of risk at some point. These risks may bring losses but they may also bring profits and expansion of the business. There are very many risks associated with businesses, some of which can be avoided and others which have become part of a business owner’s life. One of the greatest risks in a business is the risk of running at a loss. This can be caused by many factors including bad business decisions, recessions and other changes in the market. Asia to lead Global Recovery, predicts World Bank Chief

Asia needs to play a larger role in the global recovery process as compared to previous downturn since most of US consumers are facing money crunch, says World Bank chief Robert Zoellick.

In an interview given to Financial Times, Zoellick said that it was indeed difficult to see US consumers trying to assume similar role as “demand drivers” that they had in earlier recoveries as they have to pay of their debts as well as improve their finances.

Said Zoellick in the interview which was given before his present visit to India, “The US consumer has to deleverage and has to rebuild savings,” he said. “This is one of the opportunities for Asia’s larger role in the recovery” in supplying more sources of demand, said Zoellick.

The World Bank president looked at China, India as well as other economies of Asia as the new engines of the present global progress against the existing backdrop of several developed nations that are still emerging from the recession.

Zoellick also says that in case employment remains in the US above 10% next year “you are going to see feedback effects,” “It’s going to increase delinquency for credit card debt, for consumer loans, in the US some commercial real estate is quite soft and that’s going to flow back into the banking system.” he warned.

” You will see some financial institutions doing very well but if they are dealing with the consumer retail market they will continue to be hit by those losses”, he said. He added that the world was awash with liquidity and that this posed a challenge to central bankers to some East Asian countries.”

Women are interested in a career these days. Apart from marriage, they also would like to pursue their ambitions. No doubt, it is difficult as they have to balance home and office, but nevertheless they are interested in work outside their homes. Bit the question is can they also take up risk oriented work Even though they may be pursing careers, but some job demand certain risks which men have always felt they can handle them.

Women and Risks at place of work
Women have had to fight their way to pursue their career interests. Men have always felt that women were not capable of handling certain professions. But this has been proven wrong. Women have taken up challenging assignments such as in the police, army etc. and have proved equal to men. There are no way less than men.

Women are given the “softer tasks”. In India, women pilots want to fly fighter jets. So far they have not been allowed because of their sex. But now opinion is tilting in their favor and although there are certain pregnancy restrictions, they are likely to be given the opportunity to work in this sphere of activity as well.

Since women have to take care of their household as well they have to put in extra effort to excel in their work. But they are willing to take up such assignments. They are not afraid of the unknown. Google must limit its access to five say publishers

Google Inc is presently allowing publishers of its content to limit the number of free news articles to about five. These articles are accessed by viewers on its Internet search engine, which has been free so far. This decision has been taken as a concession to an ever increasing demand of those media industry elements who are disgruntled about the free access that Google permits so far.

There has been considerable criticism about the approach of Google from several media publishers in particular the chairman of News Corp as well chief executive Rupert Murdoch who argue the company was making profits from its online news based pages.

The senior business product manager of Google in a blog write up said that the company had been updating its “First Click Free” program so that publishers could limit the users from viewing no more than five articles in a day without registering or even subscribing. Earlier every click of the user of the search of Google would be treated free.

Says Cohen, “If you’re a Google user, this means that you may start to see a registration page after you’ve clicked through to more than five articles on the website of publisher using “First Click Free” in a day, while allowing publishers to focus on potential subscribers who are accessing a lot of their content on a regular basis.”

At news conference Murdoch said that the media companies should be charging for the content and must stop news aggregators like the Google from “feeding off the hard-earned efforts and investments of others”

Assertiveness is very essential in our daily lives. We can get things done if we are assertive. Of course, we must ensure that we are not aggressive. Whatever has to be said has to stated in clear and matter-of-fact terms and not in an abusive manner.

Why one must be assertive?
In all spheres of our professional lives, we have to be assertive. It is a competitive world today. One faces many challenges in one’s work arena. Also one has to deal with all kinds of people. Some may be helpful and cooperative and others may not be so helpful. It may not be very easy to convince some people. At times your views may not be acceptable to the other person. Only if one is assertive can one get one’s way.

Difference between assertiveness and aggressive
When one is aggressive one tends to be rude and can also use abuse language. Being assertive, on the other hand, means being polite and firm. If one is rude one gets nowhere. Nobody likes an abusive person.

US, India and China Relations

Recession has been tough time for many countries both developed as well as developing. The US has had its fair share of setbacks and India and China are fast recovering from this difficult economic situation. All these countries had to brave it up. Unemployment was rampant, and prices soared, and purchasing power of the people came down. Those who lost their jobs were virtually on the streets. It is a precarious situation to be in.

How has recession affected US, China and India?
Recession did impact countries in the same manner. Industrial production got a setback, less investments, unemployment, unstable market conditions. Yet the impact did vary from country to country as the recovery variations made them stand out from each other.
The United States, which as always remained a super power is now economically struggling and the dollar standing is being threatened. China and India are emerging as economic and political forces that US seems to recognize as being future contenders for the hegemony in world and economic spheres.

Recently in a meeting with Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, the US President, Barack Obama said that both China as well as India would be playing a “pivotal role” in future challenges facing the world. In fact, Obama even visited China and also is planning a visit to India in 2010.

The impact of recession on the US economy has been pretty bad. The US is taking time to recover and many observers feel that perhaps US may not be all that powerful in the years to come in world politics. It may have to share its global power with China as well as India.

The dollar has had a set back of late. It is weakening. India recently took a decision to buy gold from International Monetary Fund (IMF) to the tune of $6.7 billion which has surprised many world powers. Of course, Dr. Singh reassured US that would continue to retain its global hegemony.

The recent parley between the leaders of US, China and India, each having bilateral talks with each other was primarily aimed at discussing economic and political issues concerning the respective countries. India, of course, does feel a bit threatened by US paying more attention to China, but Obama assured the Indian Prime Minister that India would not in any way be ignored by it.

It is quite evident that US, china and India would meet more often n common issues and that US has recognized the potential of China as well as India as would- be world powers in the Asian region.

The ability of converse well is very essential in daily communication, be it at home or at workplace. We must convey things effectively. One is judged by the impact one makes on another person in his or her dealings. It is not easy to convince another person about what you believe in. The choice of words has to be effective.
